Best Boutique Hotels & Resorts in Tulum: Beach Road

Also known as Tulum’s hotel zone, this is where it all started decades ago. Today, the 6 1/2 mile oceanfront stretch is anchored by Tulum’s cliffside Mayan Archaeological Site to the north and the entrance to Sian Ka’an Biosphere, a UNESCO-protected nature reserve, to the south. In between? A dizzying amount of impeccably styled boutique hotels, beach clubs, spas, shops, restaurants and late-night locales lining both the beach and jungle sides of the OG strip. Boho aesthetics abound, blended seamlessly with oceanfront views, jungle-side sunsets and price tags to match.

Mi Amor

As the name would suggest, Mi Amor (“my love”) is perfect for couples looking for a romantic getaway. This dreamy cliffside hotel doesn’t boast a beachfront, but what it lacks in sand it makes up everywhere else, effortlessly. Amenities include a glistening infinity pool, oceanfront daybeds perched on dramatic rocky outcrops, on-site restaurant and bar serving up flavorful international fare (plus, bottomless mimosa brunch) and a serene on-site spa offering cleansing rituals, couples treatments and even a healing bath menu. Of course, this is all assuming you can drag yourself out of your beautifully-appointed room, ranging from jungle to pool to sea view, or seafront with private plunge pool. Price point: $$$

Mezzanine

This cliffside-perched boutique property is located on the quieter, northern end of the Beach Road – close to the ruins within Tulum’s own National Park. Choose from a stunning Sea View Room or dipping pool-equipped Master Suite, or save some pesos with the aptly named No-View Room. Hey, at least they’re up front about it. Whichever you choose, you’ll have direct access to the hotel’s namesake mezzanine: a sprawling terrace-restaurant boasting jaw-dropping oceanfront views, excellent Thai cuisine and one of the best, longest running happy hours on the beach strip (2×1 margaritas every day from 1pm-4pm). You can also take a dip in the lagoon-like swimming pool, lounge in a swaying hammock, or wander down the staircase leading to Playa Las Palmas below – what we feel is one of the most stunning stretches of sand in all of Tulum. Habitas

A true experiential destination, Habitas isn’t just a hotel – it’s a lifestyle. Counting outposts in Mexico, Namibia, the Saudi Arabian desert and further locales coming soon, the culture-conscious hotel group holds a core commitment to authenticity, sustainability and community connection. In Tulum, this is seen throughout efforts targeting plastic waste control, beach cleanups and reforestation in nearby Chiapas, to name a few. And we haven’t even gotten to the rooms: zero-impact sanctuaries carefully designed to co-exist with nature.

Tent-like canvas interiors are lined with natural palapa exteriors, lending an intrepid feel and effectively setting the bar on glamping. Rooms further feature private outdoor rain showers, jungle or ocean views and some with individual plunge pools. An extensive wellness program offers zen-inducing spa treatments in addition to locally-rooted rituals like Mayan clay or cacao ceremonies, plus the property’s signature, intention-setting welcome ceremony upon check-in. When hunger strikes? Simply head to on-site Moro, an ode to Spanish and Moorish cuisine helmed by Uruguayan Chef Horacio Dardano. Price point: $$$$

Another Tulum OG, Nueva Vida de Ramiro has stood the test of time for good reason. And remains one of the town’s best-kept secrets. No-frills to be sure, what this rustic retreat lacks in luxury amenities (read: no A/C) it makes up in consistently friendly staff, a premium location on the south end of the Beach Road and easily some of the most affordable beachfront prices in Tulum.

Best Boutique Hotels & Resorts in Tulum: Aldea Zama

Just a few years ago Tulum was regularly referenced as not just one but “two Tulums.” The beach and, 2 miles inland, town. Thanks to a new crop of emerging neighborhoods literally filling the gap between the two, this is no longer the case. Aldea Zama is one such neighborhood. Favored by expats and tourists, the upscale residential enclave is home to a plethora of luxury condo buildings, design-forward boutique hotels and a growing service scene including restaurants and bars, gyms and yoga studios, spas and salons; coffee shops and co-working spaces.

Be aware that while the neighborhood’s central location in between the beach and town center is indeed favorable, it isn’t easily walkable. Taxis are readily available in Aldea Zama however are notoriously expensive (as they are everywhere in Tulum). Your best bet for getting around during your stay? Rent yourself a set of wheels in the form of bicycle, car, scooter or even ATV.

Best Boutique Hotels & Resorts in Tulum: Region 15

Located in between La Veleta and the Beach Road, Region 15 is quite literally the new frontier of Tulum. It’s just as wild as it is beautiful – and seriously off the beaten path. The developing district offers advantages in that you’re as close as you can possibly get to the beach without actually staying on the beach, but realities in that you’re surrounded by jungle, open sky, dirt roads…and nothing else. You won’t be able to walk anywhere from here, so you’ll absolutely need to plan on renting a car, scooter, ATV or at the very least a bike. For those on the hunt for a truly secluded, jungle-immersed (if not adventurous) escape, Region 15 may be your perfect fit.

KAN Tulum

This authentic zen haven positions itself as a sustainable well-being hotel – and actively practices what they preach. A number of eco-friendly initiatives reduce the footprint of guests staying at KAN Tulum, ranging from reforestation measures to an on-property water treatment system to a unique, bio-architecture design built with natural materials like locally-sourced bamboo, limestone, sustainable wood and chukum. An art installation titled Re:Tzompantli even showcases 60 Mayan-inspired skulls repurposed from garbage hand-collected from the jungle.

Rooms take the form of futurist treehouse studios, seamlessly blurring the lines between nature and contemporary comforts: solar-powered A/C, kitchenettes, bathtubs, king sized beds and balconies can all be expected. Additional amenities include daily vegetarian buffet breakfast from the plant-based restaurant, on-property bike and scooter rentals, a peaceful swimming pool and even an enigmatic cenote (natural sinkhole) located just steps from the rooms.

Don’t miss climbing one of the sky-sweeping nests for panoramic jungle views (and sunsets) – or grabbing a nightcap under the stars from the Stone Lounge & Bar. Price point: $$$

Ajal Tulum Tree Houses

This escapist retreat is for the true nature seeker. An under 10-minute drive south of Tulum Centro, Ajal is adults-only, off-the-beaten-path and serving up the most mystical of Mayan vibes nestled into the jungle. You’ll feel as though you’ve stumbled upon Tulum’s best-kept secret as you emerge onto the property: a tropical treehouse village comprised of 4 canopy-suspended treehouses, an on-site restaurant & bar, jungle observation tower and even a glimmering, on-property cenote.

Built head-to-toe from natural, locally-sourced materials like wood, stone and even an innovative “coco-crete,” Ajal further employs solar panels and its own water treatment, waste management and compost systems to keep the property a zero emission refuge. Each treehouse is not only elevated 10-16 feet above the jungle floor, but seriously decked out – literally and figuratively. Vaulted palapa roofs are met with polished hardwood floors and furnishings, spacious decks, rainfall shower-equipped bathrooms and even power outlets and wifi. No A/C here but between powerful ceiling fans and a refreshing cross-breeze, you won’t need it.

Don’t miss the jungle cantina for cocktails and organic garden-to-table fare, or the aforementioned observation tower for magical sunrises, sunsets or nighttime stargazing. Price point: $$
